Europeiska kommissionen, mer känd som EU-kommissionen, godkände idag Apples köp av Beats då affären i organisationens ögon inte skulle vara till nackdel för konsumenterna.
The European Commission has cleared under the EU Merger Regulation Apple’s acquisition of Beats Electronics and Beats Music.
Att affären skulle bli godkänd var väntat och som kommissionen skriver så säljer båda företagen hörlurar, som riktar sig till olika målgrupper, men att ett stort antal globala konkurrenter så som Bose, Sennheiser och Sony fortfarande finns kvar.
In addition, Apple and Beats Electronics are not close competitors because the headphones they sell differ markedly in functionality and design. Moreover, even after the transaction, a large number of global competitors such as Bose, Sennheiser and Sony would remain.
Kommissionen tittade också på hur effekterna för distribution av digital musik kan påverkas och menade att även om Apple visserligen tillhandahåller en nedladdnings-tjänst och Beats Music en streaming-tjänst så finns konkurrens här i Europa från exempelvis Spotify och att Beats Music inte ens finns på den europeiska marknaden.
The Commission also examined the transaction’s likely effects on the distribution of digital music to consumers. Both Apple and Beats Music are active in this field. Apple offers a music downloading service through iTunes and Beats Music offers a music streaming service, although it is currently not available in the EEA. The Commission concluded that Apple faces several competitors in the EEA such as Spotify and Deezer, making it implausible that the acquisition of a smaller streaming service that is not active in the EEA would lead to anticompetitive effects.
Nu återstår det dock att affären blir godkänd i USA.
